Horse Trained In ‘Cutting’ Keeps Cow Back As Rancher Tags Calf.
The Horses are super smart, kinda like a mix between a dog and toddler.
Since I know it’s coming. This is ear-piercing, just like what people do to their babies. The difference is this isn’t purely aesthetic like humans do.
That tag will help them to track the calf so they can find it if it gets lost or stolen. For example, that tag has all kinds of info on it. Gps, gender, matching number to mother, year it was born, AIN or Animal Identification Number, flock or herd ID, etc.
With an ear tag, you don’t have to brand cattle anymore and it has way more info to help ID the animal and keep it safe with its herd.
Horses are super smart, kinda like a mix between a dog and toddler. They can learn by example and with reward systems. Sometimes they even take initiative if they like their handlers. Training them to keep the cow back so the cow doesn’t bulldoze the person does not require negative reinforcement training. It’s generally frowned upon to use negative reinforcement with horses because they will hold a grudge and they are more than smart enough to be vindictive assholes if they don’t like you.
Remember farmers and ranchers do things for a reason and just because you don’t understand it, that doesn’t automatically make it a bad thing. For reference, I grew up on a small cattle ranch with about 8 working horses and 150 head of longhorns that liked to plow through fences and wander off. Those tags are invaluable in keeping them safe.
